Prologue

"Please, don't kill me.." said the young woman, running from her husband with their child in her arms.

"But I tried to tell you, my love, he's the Chosen One." he replied, trying to comfort her.

"I don't care what he is. Your not taking my baby."

"But we must." said the man, just before a man in a black trench coat walked up behind him. The young man turned. "Your fathership," he said and bowed.

"What happens to be the trouble, my child?" the man replied.

"She will not give us the Chosen One." The man looked at the young woman.

"Please, hand us the child and you won't be harmed," he told her, holding out his arms.

She held tight to her baby. "Over my dead body, you psycho."

"So be it," he replied to her. "Kill her," he told her husband.

"Yes, your fathership..." he replied walking towards he with a dipper in his hand. "Close your eyes my love it will all be over soon."

"No please... Don't." pleading for her life. As her husband drew closer and covered her face with the dipper...

The man walked out with the child in his arms, the husband close behind. The man turned to his follower.

"Now it's your turn, my Son."

"Yes, my fathership." he replied, kneeling to one knee. The man nodded to one of his other followers.

The follower pulled out a gun and held it the young man's head and pulled the trigger. The man dropped to the ground.

"Make it look like a suicide," he said to the followers. They all nodded as they picked up the corpse and carried it into the house. Their leader, child in hand, got into his car and drove off.

Chapter One

Rachel rode in on her motorcycle, and parked it on the tracks of the abandoned subway station under the federal building. She took off her helmet to hear music playing. "Morning, Rachel," greeted Ronnie rolling over in an office chair to the open driver side door of the Defender, where Matt sat tinkering with the Video screen, Eddy under the hood.

"Morning," she replied.

"What's going on, Rach..?" said Eddy, as she walked over to investigate.

"What ya doing?" she ask looking over his shoulder.

"Oh me and Matt, we're trying to get the monitor hooked up to the engine."

"It would go faster if he knew anything about electronics," Matt remarked from the front seat.

"Hey, you do your job, and I'll do mine. All right?" replied Eddy, giving Matt a mean stare through the wind shield.

Rachel just grinned. "So is Jace up yet?"

"Nope," answered Ronnie.

"But since you're here we'll give you the honors," added Eddy.

"Great, I love waking him up," she replied, walking over to the building in the middle of the complex. She knocked once. "Jace, it's time to get up.." Rachel then realized that the door was unlocked. So she opened the door to see her partner in his bed asleep. Well, isn't that nice, she thought to herself. If I don't know any better I would actually think he was a decent human being. "Jace.. It's time to go to work."

No reply.

A mischievous smile crossed her face, and she turns from the room. "Hey, Eddy.."

Eddy looked up from the Viper.

"Come here."

He walked over to her, eyeing her curiously. "What, Rach?"

"I want you to pick up the mattress and flip it on him."

He looked as if he was about to ask why when a similar smile crossed his face as well.

They made their way to the opposite side of the bed where Jace slept.

"OK, on three," instructed Rachel. Eddy nodded.

"THREE." Eddy flip the mattress with all his might, sending Jace crashing to the floor with a thud. And the queen size mattress landing on top of him.

Jace jumped to his feet, pushing the Mattress aside. "Ahh! I'm up! I'm up!"

Rachel and Eddy broke out laughing.

"Oh, yeah... You find that funny don't you," said Jace.

Rachel and Eddy chorused in unison, "Yes."

"I could've hurt myself.. Count yourselves fortunate. I'm too tired to shot ya."

Just as they were finished laughing. The monitor rang and Joe appeared on it. "Morning, boys and girls."

Jace and Rachel ran to the monitor.

"Morning, Joe," replied Rachel.

"How's it hanging Joe," replied Jace.

"Low... I need you two to come up to my office, ASAP. And, yes, Jace you have time to take a shower. Actually I'd rather you did. The last time you were in here I had to replace the wallpaper."

"Hey! That wasn't my fault. That was after that Metro Sewage Treatment case."

"Just do it, and get up here as fast as you can. Joe out." Rachel pressed a button and killed the link.

"Well, what do we do now?" said Rachel.

"What do you mean?" replied Jace

"The Viper is..." She looked over toward the Viper with a pitiful look on her face. "What's the word I looking for?"

"Indisposed?"

"Yeah."

"That's no problem," replied Jace, "Watch this." He walked over to the passenger side. And pressed Alt, Ctrl, Delete. "Exit out of the MP3 program..."

"How did you know that?" asked Ronnie, amazed that her computer-challenged driver fixed something she couldn't...

"The chip..." he replied. Ronnie just smiled and shook her head.

When Rachel and Jace walked into Joe's office they were welcomed by a young man siting in front of his front desk.

"Ah, Rachel, Harrison, This is Agent Diamond of the FBI," Joe told them, getting out of his seat to introduce them. The man spoke up, "Detectives Slone and O'Donald. I've heard of your actions and how you two work.. And I won't permit it around me."

"And what work is that?" asked Jace.

"Where do I start?" he replied as he walked over to Astor's desk and picked up a file. He opened it and start reading a list. "Searching private property without a warrant... Paying off the Magistrate on more than one occasion... Misuse of project funding. Not to mention several other things." He concluded, and dropped the file on Astor's desk.

"Hey, that Magistrate was doing it for the good of the city..." explained Jace.

"Not to mention we solved many cases and put more people away because we bend the rules," added Rachel.

"Well we'll talk of this later I have a board meeting to attend to." Diamond walked out of the room and slammed the door behind him...

"What was that about Joe?" Asked Rachel.

Joe sat back at his desk. "Don't worry about him we just rubbed someone in Washington wrong."

"Was that what you wanted to see us about?" replied Jace, leaning against the door leading out of his office.

"Nope, I what you to check out a murder/suicide. At this house." Joe slid another file toward them. Rachel picked it up and skimmed it.

"We'll get right on it."

-

There where reporters everywhere when they rolled up in the Viper. "Great. Reporters. The last thing I need today," complained Jace as he put the car in park.

"With the way this file looks we won't be long. It looks pretty open and shut." They exited the car and made there way through the yellow tape and reporters to the house. They stopped at the front door to show their shields to the officer there.

"Detectives Slone and O'Donald. Special Projects."

The officer nodded.

"Lady's first," said Jace, moving out of the way to let Rachel go through.

The house was full of CSI personnel. They made their way to the kitchen. A taped outline of a body was on the floor.

"This must be the wife," said Rachel, kneeling down to get a better look at the scene. "The husband must be in there."

Rachel pointed to the den on the other side of a doorway beside the kitchen. Jace walked in to confirm her last sentence. He looked over at the taped outline of the gun used. He tapped a CSI officer to his right. "What Caliber is that gun." he asked pointing to the outline on the floor.

"Colt .45 Caliber." the officer replied. Jace thought to himself, Now why would he use it on his self and not his wife?

"Did they have a child?" Jace asked.

"Yeah, they're still looking for the body around the property."

"How old?"

"From the pictures, 3 to 6 months of age."

"May a see the Colt?"

"Sure." The officer handed the bag covered gun to Jace.

"Detective O'Donald, Special Projects. I got friends that can analyze this. May I take this off your hands? If anyone asks tell them to call Joe Astor Metro Federal building."

"I don't think you have the authority, Detective," the officer replied.

"Oh, trust me. I do," he answered giving the officer his card and walked away. Jace walked over to Rachel and put his hand on her shoulder.

"Hold this." he told, her handing the bag containing the weapon over. "I'm going to snoop around in their personal effects and see what else I can find. So cover me."

"Sure," she replied, keeping her eyes on him as he walk over the another CSI officer.

"Excuse me, but where is the bathroom?"

"Down the hall to the right," the officer replied.

"Thank you." Jace made his way to the bathroom and shut the door behind him. He opened the medicine cabinet. Then he put on rubber gloves and pulled out the spectral analyzer. He start scanning each pill bottle one by one.

While Jace was looking around in the bathroom, Rachel looked around the nursery. The picture on the wall caught her eye. It was of the mother and the child together and the name Joshua on the lower part of the picture frame. Then she noticed a picture of Jesus on the wall and she knew that this case wasn't so open a shut as she thought.

"Hey." Rachel jumped, and turn with her gun cocked to see Jace behind her.

"Did you find anything?"

"Nope at least I don't think so." she replied, pointing to the picture of Jesus on the wall.

"I think we need to check out the parents' room." replied Jace, "Unless there is something in that file that can tell if they are churchgoers or not?"

"Well it does say something about Dirt Road Church of the Brethren."

"Well let's go check it out."

-

As they made their way back to the Viper Rachel brought up the question about the gun.

"Why are we holding this gun?"

"Because it's evidence." replied Jace, opening the door.

"I've figured that much but why don't CSI have it?"

"Because I have a hunch," replied Jace, putting the key in the ignition.

Rachel sat down and tossed the bag in his lap. "And what hunch is that?"

"If he had that gun... Why did he kill his wife with a dipper?" he started the engine, and then smiled at her.

-

Jace stopped halfway to the driveway of the Church, and got out of the car.

"What are you doing?" asked Rachel, with a look as if to say, Are you crazy? on her face.

"Recon... You keep the pastor busy while I check their basement," replied Jace.

"Why is it I always have to be the one distracting the bad guys?" Rachel asked as she jumped in the front seat.

Jace just smiled and replied, "Because you're easier on the eye, baby girl. I'll be finished before you know it... And I mean that literally." He made his way through the brush on the side of the road as she drove on.

She came upon a rather ratty old-looking brick building with white wooden doors on the front. She put the Viper in park then walked to the double doors. She knocked once then saw that the door was open...

Meanwhile Jace was jimmying the door lock on the back of the church. He finally got the door open and walked in. "Defender One to complex," said Jace.

"Complex here.. What d'ya need, Jace?" answered Ronnie from the opposite end of the head set.

"I just wanted to see if you were taping this?" he replied, proceeding to walk down the hallway led in by the door.

"I am now."

"Good I'm putting on the cheap sunglasses." He replied, after taking out snap-on lens that covered his glasses. And placing them on his frames.

"OK now I'm switching to infrared." Jace pressed a button on his watch and the room turned dark green. Except for a door in front of him. "Hold on a minute."

Jace pulled out his Glock and walked towards it.

"It's not locked..."

"Yeah, well the phrase, "Enter at your own Risk." comes to my mind."

Jace entered, his Glock cocked and laser site on.

"Man, it's dark in here," he said over the radio. Ronnie tapped on her keyboard nervously. It's always times like this that get her on edge. Eddy walked behind her and pulled up an office chair.

"There's a lot of heat coming from in there." said Ronnie.

"Well, it looks like heat lamps." replied Eddy, gazing at the big screen.

"It smells like hash in here," said Jace. Matt walk up behind Eddy.

"Smells like what?" he asked. Ronnie and Eddy look at him.

"You know chronic," replied Ronnie.

"Mary Jane," added Eddy.

"Oh, Hash..." he replied, Matt.

Jace just shook his head and noticed Marijuana plants and heat lamps all over the room. "Well, that explains the smell." Jace replied, "Either they're selling this stuff or trying to get closer to God the Cheech and Chong way."

"Take some samples."

"Sure they have more than enough to get a small town on cloud nine. We'll just help them share the wealth," Jace replied, pulling out his Swiss Army Knife and clipped a few leaves off, dropping them in a bag.

Meanwhile Rachel walked around upstairs. "Hello?" she called, and walked down a corridor of velvet carpet and wooden benches on either side of her.

"Is anyone here?"

"Why, yes, my child," said a voice from behind her. She turned and showed her shield.

"Detective Slone, Metro Police Department. I would like to talk to someone about the murder of Ronald Vintion.

The Man nodded "I heard. Tragic. Ronald was a good man. He seemed so stable.. But guess they all seem that way before committing murder and suicide."

"We don't think that it was a suicide," Rachel replied.

"Really. Who do you think did it?" he asked in amazement and moved his hand behind his back and gripped his gun.

"Don't know. That's why I'm here actually," she replied.

He loosened his grip. "Well I'll tell you all I know."

Jace made his way through the drug room to another room, one with candles surrounding a cradle.

"What de hell?" Jace exclaimed.

"Is that... a cradle?" asked Ronnie, from over the radio. Jace walked in closer to get a better look and was surprised to see a child within it, asleep.

"Yeah, and it's occupied." He replied, "I think we just found baby Joshua."

"Well, get the kid out of there," said Eddy, from over the radio.

"Easier done than said," replied Jace, pick the sleeping baby out of his cradle gently. The kid woke up and looked at him.

"Shhh.. little guy. Uncle Jacey's gonna get us out of this place.. OK?" he said to the child, then smiled. He started out of the room and to the Viper in the front of the church.

Rachel still keeping the pastor busy asked, "Do you know of anyone who would want to try to get back at him for any reason at all?"

"Of course not. At least no one I know of," the man replied.

Just then she heard Jace over her head set.

"Rachel get the hell out of there now!" he shouted.

"Well, thank you for your time. We'll keep you updated," she replied to the man and made her way around him to the front door.

"Please do," The man replied, with a grin that made Rachel uneasy.

She quickly walked out of the church, and ran down the stairs, hopping into the Viper. Jace lay the baby in her lap.

"Hold him would you?"

"Where did the baby come from?" she asked,

"I'll explain at the complex," he replied, turning the key, and putting the Viper in reverse.

The people in the church were just getting the news of the child's disappearance. A young man opened the door from a room in the back. "Your fathership. The child is missing."

"WHAT!" he shouted.

"The chosen one is missing," the man replied.

"The woman," he said. " Well, what are you standing there for get to the car and catch her!"
